Ramsbury plastic clean up
June 12 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pmFree
Can you help to make Ramsbury’s paths and fields plastic-free?
Please come and join our Big Clean Up this Saturday 12th June, 10am – 2pm!
Speak to our volunteers in the Square, who will direct you to the focus areas.
In Class 6 at Ramsbury School, we feel very worried about the damage plastic is doing to our rivers, seas, soils and wildlife. We decided to look at the extent of plastic pollution in Ramsbury and we discovered hundreds and hundreds of old plastic tree guards lining the paths and fields, many breaking up into smaller pieces which find their way into the river. As well as talking to local landowners about alternatives to the plastic guards, we are organising our first Plastic Clean-Up this Saturday and we would love it if you could spare an hour or so to help us.
Lots of the classes at Ramsbury School will be going out on the Friday to make a start, but we need more helpers on Saturday 12th June! It would be useful to bring gardening gloves, some secateurs (or something to cut the plastic off with) and perhaps a wheelbarrow to help transport the pieces of plastic to larger piles. Local landowners will be helping us by providing trailers to transport the guards, and the Recreation Centre have allowed us to pile the rubbish there until Monday, when Wiltshire Council will collect it. We will be focusing on areas along the back track between the Froxfield Road and the Manor, as well as a small wood near Darrell’s Farm and another wood near the river at Stichcombe. Our volunteers in the Square will direct you to different areas, depending on whether you are on foot or in a car.
We also need helpers at the Recreation Ground, to compact the tree guards and put them into bin bags – the council will only accept the rubbish if it is bagged.
As our first clean-up is taking place in early summer, we will be focusing on areas away from ground-nesting birds and wildflowers. But we will be organising another clean-up later in the autumn to tackle some of the other areas which need clearing – do join us again then if you can.
If you are able to help, we would really love to see you this Saturday. Please help us to keep our beautiful village and river free from plastic pollution!
